Sinterklaas

Sinterklaas is a traditional winter festival in The Netherlands. The celebration begins in the night before the birthday of Sinterklaas (5 December). Here are some of the celebration:

1. Schoen zetten (placing a shoe) : The children put the one of the shoes in the fire place. Because the zwarte piet will come to the house through the chimney. If the family doesn’t have fireplace, the children can put the shoes in the front door, back door or in front of a heater. As a return to the Sinterklaas, the children put a food for the horse (hay, carrot), a drawing or a poem. The next day, they get something delicious in the shoes.

King’s day or Koninsgdag

King’s day is a national holiday to celebrate King’s of The Netherlands Birthday. It held most of the time on 27 th April, if 27th April is Sunday then it held on  26th April.

There two things are important in King’s day, go to the flea market (vrijmarket) and go to concert/music festival with orange wardrobe all over you. During King’s day, people can sell on the street without permit and payment of valued added taxes in flea market. Most Dutch people sell second-hand item. Continue reading

Dickens Festival Deventer

Dickens Festival or Dickens Festijn is a festival based on a famous Englishman writer Charles Dickens. The event held in two days in December, in the central city of Deventer. In this event, you can see character from the book in front of your eyes. Oliver twist, Mr. Pickwick, Scrooge, Marley and many more all there. Continue reading

Carnaval

Carnaval is a big party in south part of The Netherlands (Limburg and Noord-Brabant), such as Maastricht, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Tilburg, Eindhoven and many more. The tradition began long time ago, as part of catholic believe. Nowadays, Dutch people in the south celebrate the carnaval by partying 5 days in a row and wear a costume outfit. In Sunday (or Monday) a parade of decorated car go around the city, it called “groot optocht“. The next day,  little kid together with their classmate walked with costume. Some car prepared by the carnaval club. In the night young people go party in the club and wear costume. This festival held between February and March, it always different every year. It’s too complicated for me to explained how Dutch decide the carnaval week. Continue reading
